Do topical corticosteroids treat lichen planus?

Lichen planus can cause itchy, purplish or reddish bumps, flat patches, or irritated areas on the skin. It may also affect the mouth, genitals, scalp, or nails, where treatment choices and monitoring differ. A topical corticosteroid reduces inflammation in the area where it is applied and may help flatten active lesions and relieve itch. It does not suit every site or explain why the condition developed, so diagnosis and follow-up matter.

Use the prescribed product only on the areas and for the schedule advised. Avoid rubbing harshly, picking lesions, or applying fragranced products to sensitive skin. Tell your clinician if the mouth, eyes, genitals, scalp, or nails are involved before starting treatment. Do not place a potent corticosteroid on thin skin or under a dressing unless directed. Keep follow-up appointments if treatment is prolonged, because the plan may need adjustment as lesions change.

Seek review for painful mouth sores, difficulty eating, genital soreness, new hair loss, nail changes, or lesions that bleed or ulcerate. Prompt assessment is needed for signs of infection such as pus, spreading warmth, or worsening pain. Get urgent help for eye pain or vision changes. A new or changing lesion should be examined rather than treated repeatedly without confirmation.
