Do topical corticosteroids treat heat rash?

Heat rash, also called prickly heat, develops when blocked sweat ducts trap sweat near the skin surface. Small red or clear bumps and a prickling itch can appear in covered or sweaty areas such as the neck, chest, back, or skin folds. A corticosteroid does not open the sweat ducts or remove heat. It can reduce inflammation when the rash is notably itchy or irritated, but using a strong product or applying it over large areas without advice can cause problems.

Move to a cooler environment, take cool showers, and pat the skin dry. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of damp garments. Avoid heavy ointments, fragranced products, and activities that cause intense sweating until the skin settles. Do not scratch the bumps, because broken skin can become infected. If a clinician recommends a corticosteroid, apply a thin layer only to the affected area for the advised period; do not use it under tight clothing or coverings unless instructed.

Seek medical advice if the rash does not start improving after cooling measures, keeps recurring, or is difficult to distinguish from an infection or allergy. Prompt assessment is needed for fever, increasing pain, pus, spreading redness, or marked swelling. Get urgent help for breathing trouble, faintness, or swelling of the lips or tongue after a new exposure.
