Does topical corticosteroids treat guttate psoriasis?

Guttate psoriasis produces many small, scaly spots, often on the trunk and limbs. It can appear after a throat or other infection, although the trigger is not always clear. A topical corticosteroid can suppress inflammation and make individual spots less red, itchy, and scaly. Reaching every affected area may be difficult when the eruption is extensive, so a dermatologist may discuss additional options rather than relying on cream alone. The rash may also change over time, making follow-up useful.

Use the prescribed corticosteroid on the stated areas and follow the schedule carefully. Apply a plain moisturiser to reduce dryness and scale, unless your clinician advises otherwise. Tell your clinician about a recent sore throat, fever, joint pain, or nail changes, and mention whether psoriasis runs in your family. Do not scratch or use strong irritants on inflamed skin. If new spots continue appearing, request a review instead of extending treatment yourself.

Seek prompt care for widespread redness, severe pain, pus, fever, or a sudden change to extensive peeling or blistering. Arrange review if the eruption affects the face, eyes, or genitals, or if joint swelling develops. A clinician should reassess a first episode or a rash that is not improving, because infections and other inflammatory conditions can resemble psoriasis.
