Does topical corticosteroids treat granuloma annulare?

Granuloma annulare often appears as smooth, firm bumps arranged in a ring, commonly on the hands, feet, elbows, or other exposed areas. It is not the same as a fungal ring rash, so an antifungal cream is not automatically appropriate. A topical corticosteroid may reduce inflammation in a localised area, but the raised ring can respond slowly and may not change quickly. Some lesions cause little discomfort, which can make observation a reasonable option after a clinician confirms the diagnosis.

Have an unfamiliar ring-shaped rash examined before applying several over-the-counter products. If a corticosteroid is prescribed, use it only as directed and avoid treating large areas or thin skin without guidance. Take clear notes or photographs if the rings change, and mention any itch, tenderness, rapid growth, or new body sites. A review can determine whether the condition is localised and whether another option is more suitable.

Arrange prompt assessment if the rash is rapidly spreading, painful, ulcerated, draining, or associated with fever. Seek review when it affects the eyes, mouth, or genitals, or when the appearance is changing despite treatment. Persistent ring-shaped lesions deserve reassessment because several skin conditions can look alike.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, whether a biopsy or other test is needed, and what improvement should look like. Clarify the corticosteroid strength, application area, treatment duration, and when observation or a different treatment would be considered.
