Does topical corticosteroids treat erythema multiforme?

Erythema multiforme often produces distinctive target-like spots that can appear symmetrically on the limbs and spread toward the trunk. A topical corticosteroid may calm local inflammation and discomfort when the eruption is limited. It does not identify or remove a possible trigger, and it may not be enough when the rash is extensive or affects the lips, mouth, eyes, or other mucous membranes. A clinician may need to distinguish this condition from more serious blistering reactions.

Have a new target-like eruption assessed, especially if it followed an infection or a newly started medicine. Use a prescribed corticosteroid exactly as directed and avoid applying it to the eyes or inside the mouth unless specifically told to do so. Keep a record of recent medicines, illnesses, and supplements. Do not stop an essential medicine on your own; contact the prescriber promptly if a medication reaction is suspected.

Get urgent medical help for painful mouth sores, trouble swallowing, eye pain or redness, genital sores, widespread blistering, skin peeling, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or fever. These features need prompt evaluation rather than self-treatment. Seek review as well if the eruption is rapidly changing or the diagnosis is uncertain.

Ask whether the pattern fits erythema multiforme, whether a medicine or infection could be involved, and where the corticosteroid may be applied. Ask which symptoms require emergency attention and how eye or mouth symptoms should be monitored.
