Does topical corticosteroids treat cutaneous lupus?

Cutaneous lupus is an autoimmune condition affecting the skin. Different forms can cause persistent plaques, scale, pigment change, sensitivity to sunlight or scarring, including hair loss when the scalp is involved. A topical corticosteroid may reduce inflammation in a limited lesion, but it does not replace diagnosis or protect skin from ultraviolet exposure. Prolonged or poorly targeted use can thin skin or alter its appearance, and a treatment that works on one site may not be suitable near the eyes, on the face or on the scalp.

Arrange dermatology review for a new, persistent or scarring rash. Apply the prescribed product only to the named areas and keep follow-up appointments so activity and skin changes can be checked. Use sun-protective clothing and a suitable sunscreen if advised, because ultraviolet exposure can aggravate some lesions. Tell your clinician about joint symptoms, mouth sores, unusual fatigue or other new symptoms, since they may affect the wider assessment.

Seek prompt review for rapidly changing lesions, open sores, signs of infection, painful eye-area rash, new scalp areas with hair loss or widespread symptoms. Urgent help is needed for severe eye pain or vision changes, breathing difficulty or sudden swelling. Do not mask a worsening rash by increasing the steroid yourself.
