Does topical corticosteroids treat cheilitis?

Cheilitis means inflammation of the lips. It can follow irritation, allergy, dryness, infection or another skin condition, so a steroid is not suitable for every case. A topical corticosteroid can reduce redness, swelling, itching and discomfort when inflammation is the main problem. Lip skin is thin and the mouth is nearby, so strength, quantity and duration matter. Continued use without review may hide an infection or cause unwanted thinning. Products used on the lips should never be assumed to be safe inside the mouth.

Have persistent or recurring cheilitis assessed, particularly if it affects one area repeatedly. Follow the prescribed instructions exactly and apply only to the named skin. Stop licking, biting or peeling the lips, and avoid new balms, fragranced products and suspected irritants until the cause is clearer. A plain protective ointment may support the barrier if your clinician recommends it. Mention dental products, cosmetics, foods and medicines that preceded the flare.

Seek prompt care for marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, severe pain, bleeding that does not settle, or sores that prevent eating or drinking. Sudden lip or tongue swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency. Crusting or blisters may need assessment before a steroid is continued.

Ask what type of cheilitis is suspected, whether infection or allergy needs testing, which product belongs on the lips, and when to stop it. Ask what barrier product to use and what changes should trigger a review.
