Does topical corticosteroids treat bullous pemphigoid?

Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune blistering condition. Inflammation can separate layers of skin and produce tense, itchy blisters. A topical corticosteroid reduces local inflammation where it is applied, which may help settle new blisters and itching. The appropriate preparation depends on how widespread the condition is, the skin sites involved and your general health. Treatment may require repeated applications and checks for healing, infection and medicine effects. Do not put a prescribed steroid on the eyes, mouth or broken skin unless your clinician specifically directs you.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if bullous pemphigoid is suspected or blisters are continuing. Use the product, amount and schedule provided, and keep a record of new blisters or areas that are improving. Avoid bursting blisters; protect them with clean, non-stick dressings if advised. Gentle cleansing and reducing friction can limit further skin injury. Tell the clinician about other medicines and conditions before treatment is changed.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading blisters, fever, marked weakness, painful skin, pus, increasing warmth or redness, or trouble eating, drinking or breathing. Eye or mouth involvement needs prompt assessment because it can interfere with important functions. A sudden rash after starting a medicine also deserves timely review.

Ask which steroid preparation is intended, where it should be applied, how long to use it and what signs suggest infection or a medicine effect. Ask whether you need a biopsy or additional treatment, and how the plan will be adjusted if blisters continue.
