Does topical antifungal treatment treat tinea manuum?

Tinea manuum is a fungal infection of the hand. It may cause dryness, scaling, cracking, itching, or a sharper rash on one palm or between the fingers. Eczema, contact irritation, and psoriasis can look similar, so a persistent hand rash is not automatically fungal. Moisture, occlusive gloves, and contact with an infected foot can help fungi remain on the skin. Treatment must address the hand and reduce conditions that keep it damp.

Apply the prescribed or labelled antifungal to clean, thoroughly dry skin, including the spaces between the fingers if directed. Wash your hands after application unless the hands are the treated site, and follow the product instructions for that situation. Change damp gloves, dry carefully after washing, and do not share towels. Check the feet if they are also scaly or itchy, because reinfection can occur when another fungal site is left untreated. Avoid steroid cream alone unless a clinician has prescribed it for a confirmed reason.

Get medical advice if cracks are deep, the hand is swollen, warm, very painful, or draining, or if redness is spreading. Seek review when both hands are affected, nails are involved, the rash keeps returning, or it does not improve with correct use. A clinician can distinguish infection from dermatitis and decide whether another treatment is needed.

Ask whether the appearance fits tinea manuum, whether your feet or nails should be examined, which product is suitable for cracked skin, and how long to continue it. Mention wet work, glove use, and previous creams.
