Does topical antifungal treatment treat seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis causes redness, flaking, and sometimes itching in areas rich in oil glands, such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, and chest. A skin yeast can contribute to the inflammation, so an antifungal may reduce one part of the process. It does not instantly restore the skin barrier, and symptoms can return after they settle. Other treatments may be needed for marked inflammation, thick scale, or scalp build-up.

Use the recommended antifungal on the specified areas and for the advised schedule. For scalp disease, a medicated shampoo may need contact with the scalp before rinsing; follow its instructions carefully and avoid the eyes. Wash with lukewarm water, avoid vigorous scratching, and choose gentle, fragrance-free skin products. If flakes are thick, loosen them gently rather than picking. Keep a note of triggers such as harsh products or cold, dry weather to discuss at review.

Seek medical advice if the rash is painful, oozing, crusted, swollen, spreading beyond usual areas, or affecting the eyes. Arrange a review when the diagnosis is uncertain, symptoms interfere with sleep, or correct treatment has not helped. A persistent rash may be another condition and should not be treated indefinitely without reassessment.
