Does topical antifungal treatment treat baby acne?

Baby acne appears as small red bumps or pale spots, often on an infant’s cheeks, forehead, chin, or scalp. It can resemble other newborn rashes, including irritation or a yeast-related rash, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Baby acne commonly settles as an infant’s skin matures, while antifungal medicine is intended for infections caused by fungi. Using an unneeded product may irritate delicate skin or make the rash harder to assess.

Wash the area gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Avoid scrubbing, squeezing bumps, oily products, and medicated creams unless an infant clinician has recommended them. Do not share an antifungal product from another family member. If the rash lasts, spreads, becomes scaly, or looks different from typical baby acne, arrange an examination so the diagnosis can guide treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice if the baby has a fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, or the skin is blistered, rapidly spreading, swollen, painful, or draining fluid. Contact a clinician for a rash around the eyes or mouth, or for any eruption in a newborn that you cannot identify. These features need assessment rather than trialling an antifungal cream.

Ask whether the appearance fits baby acne or another infant rash, whether any cleanser or cream should be stopped, and what changes should prompt a review. Bring the product name and a clear description of when the rash began.
