Does topical antifungal treatment treat nail fungus?

Nail fungus can make a nail thickened, discoloured, brittle, crumbly, or partly lifted. A topical medicine has to reach the infected nail and surrounding tissue, and nails grow slowly, so visible improvement takes time as healthy nail replaces damaged nail. Trauma, psoriasis, eczema, and other nail conditions can produce similar changes. Confirming the diagnosis is useful before committing to a prolonged treatment routine.

Use the prescribed or recommended product exactly as directed and apply it consistently to the prepared nail and nearby skin if instructed. Keep nails trimmed and dry, do not share clippers, and disinfect or replace tools as advised. Wear breathable footwear and change damp socks. Treat athlete’s foot if present, because infected skin can reseed the nail. Avoid scraping deeply or removing the nail yourself.

Arrange an assessment if several nails are changing, the nail is painful or draining, the surrounding skin is red and swollen, or walking becomes difficult. Seek advice sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity. A clinician can assess whether topical treatment is reasonable or whether another approach is needed.
