Does topical antifungal treatment treat jock itch?

Jock itch, also called tinea cruris, is a fungal infection affecting the groin and nearby upper thighs. It often causes itch, scaling, and a spreading edge, while the central skin may look less inflamed. The penis and scrotum are often less involved than the surrounding groin skin. Other rashes, including intertrigo, eczema, and irritation, can mimic it, so an antifungal may not help when the diagnosis is different.

Follow the product directions and apply the treatment to clean, fully dry skin, including the area specified on the label. Keep using it for the advised duration even if itching eases early. Wash hands after application, change sweaty underwear promptly, and choose loose breathable clothing. Do not share towels or clothing, and check for athlete’s foot because fungus can spread from the feet to the groin.

Arrange a clinical review if the rash is painful, cracked, oozing, rapidly spreading, or associated with fever. Seek advice if it does not improve with correctly used treatment, repeatedly returns, or involves the genitals. Avoid self-treating a severe or unusual rash with a steroid cream, which can alter its appearance and allow fungal infection to extend.
