Does topical antifungal treatment treat intertrigo?

Intertrigo is irritation that develops where skin rubs against skin, often in folds such as the groin, under the breasts, the armpits, or the abdominal fold. Warmth, sweat, and trapped moisture can allow yeast or fungi to multiply. In that situation, an antifungal medicine may reduce the fungal contribution, while gentle cleansing, careful drying, and breathable clothing address the conditions that keep the rash active.

Not every rash in a skin fold is fungal. Irritation from rubbing, contact with a product, bacterial overgrowth, or another skin condition can look similar. A clinician may assess the fold, the border of the rash, scaling, small surrounding spots, odor, tenderness, and any drainage before recommending treatment. Using an antifungal on a non-fungal rash may not solve the underlying problem, and adding steroid medicine without advice can sometimes worsen an undiagnosed fungal infection.

Use the prescribed or pharmacist-recommended antifungal exactly as directed, applying it to clean, fully dry skin. Wash gently rather than scrubbing, pat the fold dry, and change damp clothing promptly. Loose, breathable fabrics can reduce heat and rubbing. Avoid sharing towels, and wash clothing and towels regularly while the rash is active. Do not apply several medicated creams together unless a healthcare professional has explained the combination. If the rash is not improving, keeps returning, or the medicine causes marked burning or swelling, arrange a review so the diagnosis and treatment can be checked.

Seek prompt medical care if the fold becomes rapidly more painful, hot, swollen, or tender; develops pus, spreading redness, blisters, open sores, or a strong worsening odor; or if you feel feverish or unwell. Arrange an assessment when diabetes, reduced immunity, frequent recurrences, or extensive involvement makes self-treatment less suitable. A clinician can look for infection or another cause and choose treatment that fits the findings.
