Does topical antifungal treatment treat nappy rash?

Nappy rash can result from moisture, friction, contact irritation, or infection. A yeast-related rash may look bright red and involve the skin folds, with small spots or bumps just beyond the main irritated area. A simple irritant rash is more likely to stay on skin that has been in contact with urine or stool and may improve when the area is kept dry. These patterns can overlap, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Change nappies promptly, rinse gently with lukewarm water or use a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Allow the skin to dry before applying a plain protective barrier. If a clinician or pharmacist recommends an antifungal, use the product exactly as directed and apply it only to the affected skin. Avoid steroid combinations or fragranced products unless a clinician has advised them, because they can irritate delicate skin or obscure the diagnosis.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, very sore, blistered, weeping, bleeding, or accompanied by fever. Seek prompt care if the child seems unusually sleepy, is feeding poorly, or appears unwell. A rash that does not begin to settle with appropriate care, or keeps returning, needs assessment to check for another cause.

Ask whether the rash looks more like irritation or yeast, how long the recommended treatment should be used, and which barrier product is suitable alongside it. Mention any recent antibiotics, new wipes, or previous reactions to creams.
