Does topical antifungal treatment treat cradle cap?

Cradle cap causes greasy or dry scales and patches on a baby's scalp. It is a form of infantile seborrheic dermatitis and is not a sign that the scalp is unclean. Many babies are comfortable, although the flakes may look thick or yellow and can extend to nearby skin.

Because several infant rashes can resemble one another, an antifungal should not be chosen solely from the appearance. A clinician can decide whether yeast-directed treatment fits the pattern, age, and affected areas.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby shampoo and loosen scales gently with a soft brush. Do not pick, scrape, or pull flakes away, since this can irritate the skin. If a clinician recommends a topical product, use only the stated amount and keep it away from the eyes and mouth.

Avoid adult dandruff products, essential oils, and medicated creams unless a healthcare professional has specifically advised them for your baby. Take note of redness, oozing, or changes beyond the scalp.

Arrange prompt medical advice if the scalp becomes painful, very red, swollen, wet, crusted, or develops blisters, or if your baby seems unwell or has a fever. Seek advice when the rash spreads or does not improve with gentle care.

Ask whether the scalp changes are typical cradle cap, whether any medicated product is suitable for your baby's age, how often to use it, and which signs would mean the diagnosis needs review.
