Does topical antibiotic therapy treat razor bumps?

Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, develop when a recently cut hair curves back into the skin and causes inflammation. Small raised bumps may be itchy or tender, and some can contain pus. A topical antibiotic may be chosen when inflammation or a secondary bacterial problem needs treatment. It will not straighten a curly hair as it grows or prevent every new bump, so treatment often includes changing the way the area is shaved.

Use a clean, sharp shaving tool and avoid stretching the skin tightly. Shave in the direction of hair growth with light strokes, or consider trimming rather than shaving close. Do not pick, squeeze, or repeatedly pass over bumps. Apply any prescribed medicine to clean skin exactly as directed, and avoid combining several irritating products unless a clinician has advised it. A clinician can discuss other options if bumps recur.

Arrange an assessment if bumps are painful, repeatedly drain, leave dark marks or scars, or continue despite gentler shaving. Prompt care is appropriate if redness spreads, swelling becomes marked, or you develop fever or feel unwell. A persistent facial eruption may be another condition, so diagnosis matters before adding more products.
