Does topical antibiotic therapy treat impetigo?

Impetigo is a contagious superficial skin infection that may begin as blisters or red sores and develop a honey-coloured crust. A topical antibiotic can be considered when the affected area is limited and the diagnosis is clear. More widespread, severe, recurrent, or deeper infection may need another treatment plan. Because eczema, cold sores, insect bites, and other conditions can look similar, avoid assuming that every crusted sore is impetigo. Scratching can transfer bacteria to nearby skin or another person.

Arrange a medical assessment, especially if sores are spreading or affecting a child. If prescribed a topical antibiotic, clean the area gently as directed, apply the medicine with clean hands, and wash hands afterward. Keep sores covered with a light dressing when practical, do not share towels or razors, and wash clothing and bedding that touch the lesions. Keep children away from close-contact activities until a clinician says it is appropriate to return. Do not pick crusts or use leftover antibiotics.

Seek prompt care if the infection spreads quickly, becomes painful or swollen, produces increasing drainage, or is accompanied by fever or marked tiredness. Urgent assessment is needed for sores near the eye, facial swelling, or a child who appears unwell. Arrange review if new lesions continue after treatment starts, the skin is not settling, or episodes keep recurring. A clinician may need to reconsider the diagnosis or treatment.

Ask whether the sores are impetigo, how to clean and cover them, and when close contact or school can resume. Ask what symptoms would mean the prescribed topical treatment is not enough.
