Does tinea versicolor cause skin rash?

Tinea versicolor often produces multiple flat patches rather than raised bumps. They may be lighter, darker, pink, or tan than nearby skin, with a fine scale that becomes easier to see when the area is gently rubbed. The upper chest, back, shoulders, neck, and upper arms are common locations. Itching may be mild or absent, and heat or sweating can make the patches more noticeable. Many other rashes can look similar, so appearance and distribution matter.

Have a clinician check a new or persistent rash, especially when the pattern is unclear. If tinea versicolor is diagnosed, use the prescribed or recommended antifungal treatment over the instructed area and for the full advised course. Keep clothing and towels clean, avoid sharing personal items, and keep sweaty skin dry when possible. A treated rash may stop scaling before its colour becomes even again.

Seek prompt care if the rash is rapidly spreading, painful, blistering, producing pus, or accompanied by fever or feeling very unwell. Get urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, or a severe reaction after applying a product. Arrange review when treatment does not help or the rash keeps returning.
