Does tibial plateau fracture cause inability to bear weight?

The tibial plateau is the upper surface of the shinbone where it meets the knee. A fracture in this weight-bearing area can make standing or walking sharply painful. Swelling, bruising, stiffness and a feeling that the knee cannot support you may occur. The severity depends on the fracture pattern and whether the joint surface is involved.

Avoid putting weight through the injured leg until a clinician has assessed it. Keep the leg supported, use cold packs wrapped in cloth for short periods, and do not try to test the knee by walking. Seek urgent medical assessment after a fall, twist or blow followed by inability to bear weight, marked swelling or knee deformity. Emergency help is also appropriate if the foot becomes cold, pale, numb or unusually weak, or if pain and tight swelling rapidly worsen. These signs can indicate injury requiring prompt treatment.
