Does thyroid cancer cause a neck lump?

A thyroid cancer lump may be felt at the front or lower part of the neck. It can be a thyroid nodule or an enlarged lymph node nearby. Some people notice a firm area, neck fullness, or a change that moves when swallowing; others have no symptoms beyond the lump.

A neck lump can also result from infection, a benign thyroid nodule, a salivary-gland problem, or another non-cancerous change. Its feel alone cannot identify the cause. Assessment may include an examination, thyroid blood tests, ultrasound, and sometimes a needle sample.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new, enlarging, firm, or persistent neck lump. Record when it appeared and whether you have voice change, swallowing difficulty, pain, or recent infection. Bring details of thyroid problems or radiation treatment in your medical history.

Seek urgent help if a neck lump is accompanied by difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, or sudden voice change. These symptoms can affect the airway or swallowing and should not wait for a routine appointment. A stable lump still deserves timely review.
