Does thoracic outlet syndrome cause hand numbness?

Hand Numbness is a common presentation of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome when the nerves or circulation near the shoulder are affected. Numbness may involve part or all of the hand and can be accompanied by pins and needles, aching, weakness, or symptoms that spread up the arm. Raising the arm or carrying a load may make the pattern more noticeable.

The thoracic outlet is a narrow region between the neck and shoulder where nerves and blood vessels travel toward the arm. Compression there can make sensation change, particularly during certain postures. Numbness can also come from the neck, elbow, wrist, diabetes, medicines, or circulation problems. The location and triggers help a clinician distinguish these possibilities; hand numbness alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Keep a note of which fingers are affected, how long numbness lasts, and whether neck or arm position changes it. Vary your posture, support the arm during desk work, and take breaks from overhead tasks. Avoid aggressive stretching or strengthening while sensation is changing. A physiotherapist can guide gentle movement and shoulder control after an examination.

Book an assessment if numbness returns, spreads, affects grip, or interferes with sleep or daily tasks. Seek urgent help for sudden numbness with facial drooping, speech trouble, severe weakness, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Prompt care is also needed if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, swollen, or intensely painful.
