Short answer

Tetanus vaccination helps prevent tetanus after an animal bite, but it does not treat the wound itself or other infections.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Tetanus vaccination is preventive, not wound treatment.
Other risks
Animal bites may require assessment for infection and rabies.

What the vaccination does

Tetanus is a serious illness caused by bacteria entering damaged skin. A vaccination prepares the immune system to protect against tetanus; it does not close torn tissue, remove dirt, kill bacteria in the wound, or protect against every infection associated with an animal bite.

A clinician considers the wound, the animal involved, your vaccination history, and local public-health advice. You may need wound care, antibiotics, rabies assessment, or other treatment in addition to tetanus prevention.

After the bite

Wash the area gently with soap and running water, cover it with a clean dressing, and arrange medical advice promptly. Take your vaccination record if available and describe when the bite happened, whether the skin was broken, and whether the animal can be observed safely.

Do not seal a deep or contaminated wound yourself. Watch for increasing redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, worsening pain, or reduced movement, and report these changes.

When to get urgent help

Seek urgent care for a deep wound, uncontrolled bleeding, a bite to the face, hand, eye, or genitals, severe pain, loss of movement, or signs of infection. Get prompt advice after a bite from an unfamiliar, stray, or unavailable animal because rabies prevention may be time-sensitive.

Questions for your doctor

Is my tetanus vaccination up to date for this wound? Do I need wound closure, antibiotics, rabies assessment, or a further vaccine dose, and which warning signs should I monitor?

Questions people ask

Does a tetanus shot stop an animal-bite infection?

No. It targets tetanus prevention; a clinician must assess the wound for cleaning, antibiotics, and other care.

Should I seek advice if the bite looks small?

Yes. Even a small broken-skin wound should be cleaned and checked against your vaccination history.
