Does tendon repair surgery treat quadriceps tendon rupture?

The quadriceps tendon connects the thigh muscles to the kneecap. It works with the patellar tendon to straighten the knee. A rupture can lead to pain, swelling, a change in the kneecap’s position, and an inability to lift the straight leg or climb safely.

Repair reconnects the torn tendon to the upper part of the kneecap, often with sutures or fixation. The choice depends on whether the tear is partial or complete, the tendon’s quality, the timing of care, and associated damage. A brace protects the repair while movement and strength return in stages.

Seek an orthopaedic assessment promptly if you felt a sudden tear and cannot straighten the knee. Keep the leg supported and avoid unsupported walking, deep bending, squatting, or stairs until you have clear instructions. Use prescribed aids correctly and protect the skin from prolonged pressure.

The clinician may test the extensor mechanism and arrange imaging. Discuss the brace position, weight-bearing plan, physiotherapy schedule, and practical help needed at home during the first phase.

Go for urgent assessment if the leg is visibly deformed, the foot becomes cold, pale, numb, or weak, swelling increases quickly, or pain is severe. Contact the treating team if a brace slips, the wound becomes increasingly red or draining, or knee control worsens.

Ask where the tendon has torn, whether repair is possible, and how the kneecap and extensor mechanism will be protected. Clarify wound care, brace use, bathing, driving, work, sleep positioning, and the signs of infection or repair failure.
