Influenza often begins with a rapid onset of feverishness, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and marked tiredness. A clinician can review these symptoms, their onset, exposure history, health conditions, and medicines during a remote visit. They can discuss testing, fluids, rest, symptom relief, and whether prescription antiviral treatment should be considered. Because a remote visit cannot fully examine the chest or measure every vital sign, direct assessment may still be needed.

Write down when the illness started, the highest temperature you have measured, breathing changes, fluid intake, and any test result. Keep your medication list close and mention pregnancy, asthma, diabetes, immune problems, or other long-term conditions. Follow the clinician's advice about rest, fluids, staying away from others while unwell, and medicines. Do not take antibiotics for influenza unless another bacterial infection has been diagnosed.

Obtain urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, inability to stay awake, severe dehydration, or a seizure. Contact a clinician promptly if fever or cough improves and then returns worse, or if you are in a higher-risk group and symptoms have just begun. A child who is unusually drowsy, struggling to breathe, or not drinking needs immediate assessment.
