Does targeted therapy treat neuroendocrine tumours?

Neuroendocrine tumours can behave differently from one another. Some grow slowly, while others are more active; they may also begin in different organs. A targeted medicine is chosen when a tumour has a feature that the medicine can act on, such as a specific receptor or molecular change. Testing of tumour tissue, blood tests, scans, and the clinical picture may all help guide the choice.

Treatment may aim to control growth, reduce hormone-related effects, or ease symptoms. Targeted therapy can be used alone or alongside another treatment, and it is not suitable for every neuroendocrine tumour. The plan can change if scans show a different response or side effects become difficult.

Ask the oncology team what subtype and grade of neuroendocrine tumour you have, where it started, and whether tissue testing found a treatment target. Discuss how the medicine is taken, which monitoring tests are needed, and how response will be assessed.
