Does targeted therapy treat kidney cancer?

Many kidney cancers rely on signals that help tumour cells grow or encourage blood vessels to supply the tumour. Targeted medicines interfere with selected parts of these pathways. They may be used when cancer has spread, when surgery is not the first option, or as part of a wider plan with other cancer treatments.

The oncology team considers the cancer subtype, scans, symptoms, previous treatment, kidney and liver function, blood pressure, and other health conditions. Targeted therapy is not one single drug, and a medicine that suits one person may not suit another. The team checks whether the cancer is responding and whether treatment effects remain manageable.

Before starting, tell the team about high blood pressure, heart problems, bleeding concerns, operations, dental procedures, and every prescription or non-prescription product you use. Ask how and when to take the medicine, whether it can interact with other treatments, and how monitoring will be arranged.

Take doses as directed and keep scheduled blood pressure checks and blood tests. Report new symptoms early rather than changing the dose yourself. The team may pause, adjust, or change treatment when the response or side effects call for it.

Call the oncology team promptly for a severe or persistent headache, unusual bleeding, black stools, severe diarrhoea, painful mouth changes, a worsening rash, or a sudden rise in blood pressure. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, weakness on one side, or confusion.
