What the discharge means

Swimmer's ear affects the skin lining the outer ear canal, often after water remains in the canal or the skin is irritated. Discharge may be watery, cloudy, or thicker, and the ear may feel blocked. Pain when the outer ear is pulled or the small flap at the canal entrance is pressed is a useful clue.

Ear discharge can also come from a middle-ear problem, an injured eardrum, or another cause. Its colour alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

What to do

Keep the ear dry and wipe only the outer ear. Avoid swimming until symptoms have settled and do not put cotton buds, fingers, oils, or unprescribed drops into the canal. A clinician can inspect the canal and choose drops safely, particularly if an eardrum problem is possible.

Use pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the product directions. Do not share towels, and dry the outer ear gently after washing without directing air or objects into the canal.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe pain, fever, swelling spreading around the ear, new hearing loss, dizziness, facial weakness, or feeling very unwell. People with diabetes or a weakened immune system should seek medical advice promptly for ear-canal pain or discharge.

Arrange review if discharge persists, returns after treatment, smells strongly, or is accompanied by worsening pain. Prompt examination helps distinguish outer-ear inflammation from problems deeper in the ear.
