Does surgical management of miscarriage treat missed miscarriage?

A missed miscarriage means a pregnancy has stopped developing but the body has not yet passed the pregnancy tissue. Surgery uses instruments, usually through the vagina and cervix, to empty the uterus. The procedure is planned after the diagnosis is confirmed and may involve anaesthesia. Tissue may be sent for examination when clinically appropriate.

Surgery addresses the tissue remaining in the uterus; it does not reverse the pregnancy loss or guarantee how a future pregnancy will develop. Medication or waiting for the body to pass the tissue may also be discussed.

Your care team will explain the procedure, preparation, anaesthesia, bleeding expectations and follow-up. Tell them about medicines, allergies, blood group information if known, previous operations and any possibility of another pregnancy. Arrange transport and support if sedation or anaesthesia is planned.

Afterward, use the discharge instructions for pain relief and activity. Light bleeding and cramping can occur, but the team should tell you what is expected and how to contact them. Emotional support can be part of recovery; grief after miscarriage deserves care.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology team urgently for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, faintness or feeling very unwell. Seek emergency help for collapse, breathing difficulty or pain that cannot be controlled. Follow-up is important if bleeding continues or pregnancy symptoms do not settle as expected.
