Does stroke cause numbness and tingling?

A stroke can interrupt brain regions or nerve pathways that carry sensation. The person may feel numbness, pins and needles, reduced touch, or an unusual burning sensation in the face, arm, or leg. It may affect one side and may occur with weakness, speech difficulty, vision change, or poor balance.

Numbness and tingling can also result from pressure on a nerve, migraine, diabetes, medication effects, or other conditions. A sudden new pattern is treated as urgent because the cause cannot be safely identified at home.

For sudden numbness or tingling, call emergency services, record the time it started, and do not drive. Keep the person seated or lying safely while help is arranged. Note any weakness, facial change, speech problem, or confusion.

Do not wait for the sensation to settle and do not give food, drink, or tablets if swallowing or alertness is impaired. Symptoms that disappear still need urgent assessment.

Get emergency help for sudden numbness or tingling with facial drooping, one-sided weakness, slurred speech, confusion, severe headache, vision change, dizziness, or difficulty walking. These symptoms can indicate a time-sensitive neurological emergency.

Arrange medical review for persistent, recurrent, or gradually spreading symptoms, even when no emergency signs are present. A clinician may check sensation, strength, circulation, blood sugar, and medicines.
