Does strep throat cause difficulty swallowing?

Strep throat is an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Swallowing may hurt because the lining is inflamed; the pain can be felt in the throat and may extend toward the ears. You might also notice fever, swollen or tender glands in the neck, red tonsils, or white patches. A cough, runny nose, or hoarse voice points more toward a viral throat infection, although symptoms can overlap.

Difficulty swallowing has many possible causes, so the symptom alone cannot identify strep throat. A clinician may examine your throat and use a throat swab when bacterial infection is suspected. Testing helps guide treatment and avoids taking antibiotics when they are unlikely to help.

Drink cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Rest your voice and use simple comfort measures recommended by a pharmacist or clinician. Take any prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and finish the course unless the prescriber tells you to stop. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine. Wash your hands regularly and avoid sharing cups or utensils while you are unwell.

Arrange a medical assessment if swallowing pain is severe, symptoms are worsening, or you have a fever or swollen neck glands with no cough. Prompt care is especially important if symptoms are not settling or keep returning.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, are drooling, have trouble breathing, develop rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck, or sound muffled when speaking. These signs can indicate a complication or another problem that needs immediate assessment.
