Does stoma surgery treat bowel cancer?

A surgeon brings part of the bowel through an opening in the abdominal wall. Stool then leaves through the stoma into a pouch, either because a section of bowel has been removed or because the usual route needs time to heal. A colostomy uses the colon; an ileostomy uses the small bowel.

For bowel cancer, a stoma may be planned during an operation, created temporarily to protect a join, or needed for longer-term bowel diversion. Whether it can later be reversed depends on the operation, healing and overall treatment plan. Other cancer treatments may still be needed.
