Does STI screening treat pelvic inflammatory disease?

Pelvic inflammatory disease is inflammation or infection affecting the upper reproductive organs, such as the womb, fallopian tubes or ovaries. STI screening uses samples or tests to look for sexually transmitted infections, some of which can contribute to PID. A negative screen does not rule out PID because other organisms or causes may be involved, and a clinician may diagnose PID from symptoms and examination. Treatment for suspected PID is separate and may need to begin before every test result is available.

Arrange prompt clinical assessment for pelvic pain, pain during sex, unusual discharge, bleeding between periods or fever. Tell the clinician about recent sexual exposure, pregnancy possibility, allergies and medicines. If PID is diagnosed or suspected, take the prescribed treatment exactly as directed and attend follow-up. Partners may need testing or treatment, and avoiding sex until your clinician says it is safe can reduce reinfection risk.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening lower-abdominal pain, fainting, persistent vomiting, high fever, heavy bleeding or feeling very unwell. Urgent assessment is also needed if pelvic pain occurs during pregnancy or if symptoms do not improve after starting treatment, because complications may need hospital care.
