Does Stevens-Johnson syndrome cause rash with fever?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious immune-mediated reaction, often linked to a recently started medicine or, less often, an infection. The illness may begin with fever, tiredness, sore throat, or burning eyes before skin changes become obvious. The rash can blister, peel, or become painful, and involvement of the mouth, eyes, or genital area is especially concerning. Rash with fever has many possible causes, so this symptom pair does not by itself identify Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

If a new rash appears with fever, stop to consider any recently started or changed medicines and seek urgent clinical advice; do not restart a suspected medicine unless a clinician tells you to. Take the medicine packaging or a current medication list with you. Avoid applying new creams or breaking blisters while waiting for assessment, because damaged skin can lose its protective barrier.

Go to an emergency department immediately for a painful or fast-spreading rash, blisters, peeling skin, sores in the mouth or eyes, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, faintness, or reduced urination. These signs can indicate extensive skin or mucosal involvement and dehydration. Do not wait for a routine dermatology appointment when these features are present.
