Does stereotactic radiosurgery treat meningioma?

A meningioma grows from the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and many are managed with observation when they are small and causing no problems. Focused radiation may be considered when a tumour is well defined, is growing, remains after surgery or returns, or lies where an operation could be difficult. It is designed to stop or slow tumour growth rather than remove the mass immediately. The decision depends on the tumour’s size, position, relationship to nerves and blood vessels, symptoms and scan changes. Larger or pressure-producing tumours may need another approach.

Ask for an explanation of your scan and whether observation, surgery or radiosurgery best matches the tumour’s behaviour. Tell the team about headaches, seizures, changes in sight or hearing, facial sensation, balance, strength or concentration. Treatment planning uses imaging to map the meningioma and protect nearby structures. Follow-up appointments and scans remain important because the tumour may change gradually and radiation effects can also develop over time.

Seek urgent care for a new seizure, sudden weakness or numbness, a sudden change in vision, severe confusion, repeated vomiting, loss of consciousness or a rapidly worsening headache. Contact the treatment team promptly for new or worsening neurological symptoms after radiosurgery.
