Does statin therapy treat peripheral arterial disease?

Peripheral arterial disease narrows arteries that supply the limbs, often causing aching or cramping in a calf or thigh during walking. A statin helps manage cholesterol and may make artery-wall deposits less likely to worsen. It is part of protecting the circulation and lowering the risk of heart attack or stroke; it does not directly reopen a narrowed leg artery or provide instant relief during walking. Other care may include exercise guidance, tobacco support, blood-pressure treatment and assessment of circulation.

Take the prescribed statin regularly and tell your clinician if leg pain changes after starting it. Do not assume every ache is a medicine side effect: PAD pain often follows a repeatable walking pattern, while muscle symptoms can be more widespread. Follow advice about supervised walking, foot care and smoking cessation. Inspect feet for blisters, cuts or colour changes, particularly if sensation is reduced, and report wounds that do not heal.

Seek urgent help for a foot or leg that becomes suddenly cold, pale, blue, numb or very painful, or for new weakness. Prompt assessment is also needed for a non-healing wound, spreading redness or pain at rest. Call emergency services for chest pain, severe breathlessness or sudden neurological symptoms. These signs can indicate a serious circulation problem and should not be explained away as ordinary PAD discomfort.
