Does statin therapy treat metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk factors that may include increased waist size, raised blood pressure, raised blood sugar and abnormal blood fats. A statin targets cholesterol and some related lipid problems; it does not directly correct blood pressure, blood sugar or body weight. Managing the whole pattern can reduce strain on the heart and blood vessels. Discuss a realistic eating and activity plan, especially if joint pain, fatigue or another condition limits exercise. Tell your clinician about diabetes, pregnancy plans, liver problems, muscle symptoms and every medicine or supplement you use. Never stop prescribed treatment without advice. Keeping a home record of blood pressure or glucose, when recommended, can help show how the plan is working.

Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden weakness, confusion or difficulty speaking. Contact your clinician promptly for severe muscle pain or weakness, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes while taking a statin.
