Does spondylolisthesis cause radiating leg pain?

When a vertebra shifts, the space around a spinal nerve can become irritated or narrowed. This may produce pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the thigh, calf, or foot. The sensation may be burning, electric, aching, or accompanied by tingling. The exact route and associated weakness depend on which nerve is affected. Symptoms can change with sitting, standing, walking, or bending.

Arrange an assessment if radiating pain is new, persistent, or affecting walking, sleep, or work. Keep gently mobile within tolerable limits, and avoid positions or lifting that clearly worsen the symptoms. A clinician may assess muscle power, sensation, reflexes, and walking, then recommend physiotherapy, symptom relief, or imaging based on the findings. Do not ignore increasing weakness simply because pain fluctuates.

Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing leg weakness, difficulty lifting the foot, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the inner thighs. Sudden severe symptoms after an injury also need prompt evaluation. Contact a clinician soon if pain is steadily worsening, spreads further down the leg, or is joined by persistent numbness.
