Does splinting treat cubital tunnel syndrome?

Short answer
Splinting may relieve cubital tunnel syndrome by limiting prolonged elbow bending, but it does not correct every cause of ulnar nerve compression.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Nerve involved
- The ulnar nerve at the inner elbow
- Support goal
- Limits prolonged, tight elbow bending
- Watch for
- Persistent numbness or hand weakness
What this means
The ulnar nerve passes behind the inner side of the elbow. Bending the elbow for long periods or leaning on it can narrow or irritate the space around the nerve. A comfortable night support may keep the elbow from folding tightly and may reduce tingling in the little finger and the adjacent side of the ring finger.
Support is one part of care, not a test that proves the diagnosis. Symptoms can also come from the neck, wrist or another nerve problem. Ongoing numbness, reduced pinch strength or hand clumsiness warrants an examination because prolonged nerve pressure can affect muscle function.
What to do next
Use the elbow support only as directed and check that it does not cause pressure, swelling or colour change. Avoid resting the inner elbow on hard surfaces and change positions during phone use, driving or desk work. Keep the shoulder, wrist and fingers moving comfortably unless advised otherwise.
Arrange a review if symptoms remain after a reasonable trial, disturb sleep or return when the support is removed. A clinician can tailor activity changes and decide whether further testing or treatment is needed. See [Cubital Tunnel Syndrome](/conditions/cubital-tunnel-syndrome/) and [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/).
When to seek care
Seek prompt care for new or worsening hand weakness, persistent numbness, visible wasting between the thumb and index finger, or difficulty spreading the fingers. After an injury, urgent assessment is needed if the arm is severely painful, misshapen, cold or discoloured.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the ulnar nerve is being irritated at the elbow or elsewhere, how much elbow bending to allow at night, and how to avoid pressure during daily tasks. Ask which changes would mean the nerve needs faster treatment.

Questions people ask
Where should a cubital tunnel splint be worn?
It is commonly used around the elbow, often at night, but the position and schedule should match the advice given for your symptoms.
Can I lean on my elbow with the splint on?
No. A splint does not remove pressure from the inner elbow, so use padding or change position instead.
