Does splinting treat clavicle fracture?

Short answer
Splinting does not usually heal a clavicle fracture directly, but selected support may protect the arm while the bone is assessed and recovers.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Body area
- The collarbone between the chest and shoulder
- Support choice
- An arm sling is often considered instead of a rigid splint

- Imaging and checks of skin, nerves and circulation guide care
What this means
The clavicle connects the breastbone to the shoulder and carries forces from the arm. A broken collarbone is commonly supported with an arm sling rather than a rigid splint, because the shoulder and elbow need a carefully planned balance between protection and movement. The correct choice depends on examination and imaging.
Support can reduce movement and discomfort, but it cannot bring every fracture into the right position. A clinician checks whether the skin is threatened, whether the pieces are displaced, and whether nerves or blood vessels are affected. Some fractures need observation and rehabilitation; others need specialist treatment.
What to do next
Keep the injured arm supported in the way advised after assessment. Avoid lifting, pushing, pulling or leaning on that side until a clinician gives you a safe progression. Follow instructions about shoulder, elbow and hand movement so stiffness does not build up unnecessarily.
Do not improvise a tight brace around the chest or shoulder. Check the fingers for normal warmth, colour and sensation, and attend follow-up so healing and shoulder movement can be reviewed. Read about [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/).
When to seek care
Seek urgent care after a clavicle injury if the bone is pressing against or breaking the skin, the arm becomes cold or pale, or there is new weakness or loss of sensation. Get prompt review for increasing swelling, severe pain, breathing difficulty or trouble swallowing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which support is appropriate, how to position the arm, and when gentle shoulder movement can begin. Ask what lifting limits apply, when follow-up imaging is needed, and which symptoms should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Can a splint realign a broken collarbone?
A support can limit movement, but it cannot reliably realign a fracture; alignment and treatment need clinical assessment.
Should I keep my shoulder completely still?
Follow the movement plan given after assessment, because safe hand, elbow or shoulder movement may help limit stiffness.
