Does splinting treat AC joint injury?

Short answer
Splinting can help protect and support an AC Joint Injury while it settles, but it does not treat every injury on its own.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- A support can limit painful movement and protect the shoulder during early recovery.
- What it cannot do
- It cannot by itself repair a fracture or realign a significantly displaced joint.
What a splint can do
The acromioclavicular joint sits at the top of the shoulder where the collarbone meets part of the shoulder blade. After a fall or direct blow, a support may reduce unwanted shoulder movement and make daily tasks more comfortable while pain and swelling improve. The right support depends on the injury, skin condition, comfort, and whether a fracture or major displacement is present. A splint cannot realign a displaced joint or heal damaged structures by itself.
Using support safely
Have the injury assessed before choosing or wearing a support, especially after a visible deformity, strong impact, or inability to raise the arm. Follow instructions about fit and wearing time; it should not cause increasing numbness, colour change, swelling, or pressure on the skin. As pain allows, a clinician may introduce gentle movement so the shoulder does not become unnecessarily stiff, followed by progressive strengthening.
When to seek care promptly
Seek urgent care if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak, or if pain and swelling escalate quickly. Prompt assessment is also needed for an open wound, a suspected fracture, chest symptoms, or an arm that cannot be moved after injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what grade or pattern of injury is suspected, whether an X-ray is needed, and how long support should be used. Ask when to start shoulder motion, which lifting limits apply, and what signs mean the fit or treatment needs review.

Questions people ask
Should I keep my shoulder completely still?
Usually, prolonged complete immobilisation is not appropriate without clinical advice; gentle movement may be introduced when safe.
Can I use any sling or splint?
No. The support should match the injury and fit without causing pressure, numbness, or circulation changes.
