Does spinal stenosis cause lower back pain?

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing around structures in the spine. It may create local discomfort in the lower back and may irritate nearby nerves. Some people notice pain, stiffness, or aching after standing, while others mainly notice leg symptoms with walking. Sitting or leaning forward can feel more comfortable for some people. Lower back pain has many possible causes, so its presence alone cannot identify spinal stenosis.

Arrange an examination when pain continues, restricts movement, or keeps returning. A clinician may assess your posture, spinal movement, leg strength, sensation, reflexes, and walking tolerance. Depending on the findings, care may involve physiotherapy, gradual activity, and medication advice. Keep moving within tolerable limits, use planned rests, and avoid repeatedly forcing a movement that sharply increases pain.

Seek urgent medical attention for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the groin, rapidly worsening weakness, fever with severe back pain, or pain after a major injury. Arrange prompt review if your ability to stand or walk changes quickly.
