Does skin tag removal treat skin tags?

A skin tag is a soft, usually flexible growth that may hang from a small stalk. Removal is an office procedure chosen according to the tag’s size, base, position, and whether it repeatedly catches on clothing or jewellery. The clinician may numb the area, remove the tag, and advise simple care while the small wound settles.

The treated spot may be temporarily red, tender, darker, or lighter than nearby skin. A mark can remain, particularly if the tag was large or the area heals slowly. Removing one tag does not change the skin’s tendency to develop another tag in a different place.

Book an examination if the growth has not been diagnosed or if it is changing. Once confirmed, discuss whether removal is useful for irritation, repeated snagging, or appearance. Follow instructions about washing, covering, and sun protection after the procedure. Do not tie off or cut a tag yourself, because bleeding and infection can occur and a different growth may be mistaken for a skin tag.

Seek medical review before removal if the growth is firm, rapidly enlarging, irregular, persistently sore, crusted, or bleeding without rubbing. After treatment, contact the clinic for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus-like drainage, fever, or bleeding that continues despite direct pressure.
