Does shoulder stabilisation surgery treat shoulder instability?

Shoulder instability means the joint moves too far, partly slips, or dislocates because its supporting tissues or bone no longer control motion well. It may follow an injury, repeated overhead activity, or a previous dislocation. Stabilisation surgery addresses a specific mechanical problem found on examination and imaging. Depending on the findings, the surgeon may repair the labrum and capsule, tighten stretched tissue, or use a different reconstruction when bone loss is present. Surgery is one part of treatment, not a substitute for restoring muscle control.

Record when the shoulder slips, which position triggers it, and whether you can return it yourself. Your clinician may first recommend activity changes and physiotherapy to improve shoulder-blade and rotator-cuff control. If surgery is chosen, plan for a protected early phase followed by progressively harder exercises. Keep the wound and sling instructions clear, attend reviews, and avoid testing stability with sudden stretches or heavy loads. Rehabilitation supports the repair and helps retrain coordinated movement.

Arrange medical review for repeated slipping, apprehension when reaching, or loss of confidence using the arm. Seek urgent care for a painful deformity, inability to move after an injury, new numbness or weakness, or a hand that becomes cold or changes colour. Following surgery, report fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, sudden swelling, escalating pain, or a new unstable sensation.
