Does septic arthritis cause pain that wakes you at night?

Septic arthritis is an infection within a joint. Inflammation may cause deep pain that continues when the joint is still, including during sleep. The joint can also become swollen, warm, tender and difficult to move. Fever or feeling unwell may occur, but symptoms can vary and night pain by itself does not establish the cause.

Night pain can also accompany injuries, nerve irritation and other inflammatory conditions. A clinician will consider the whole pattern: when the pain began, whether the joint is hot or swollen, and whether movement or weight-bearing has changed.

Contact a healthcare service promptly if new night pain is severe, persistent or linked with a hot, swollen joint. Stop activities that increase pain and keep the joint in a comfortable position. Do not massage or force movement through marked pain.

Prepare details about the affected joint, the first night symptoms appeared, recent infections or skin breaks, and any recent injection or procedure. These details can help guide examination and testing.

Seek emergency care promptly for night pain with fever, shaking chills, confusion, severe weakness, rapidly increasing swelling, or inability to move or bear weight. Urgent assessment is also wise after a recent joint procedure or wound, or when immune defences are reduced.
