Does septic arthritis cause inability to bear weight?

Septic arthritis is an infection inside a joint. Inflammation and fluid buildup can make even small movements painful, while pressure through the joint may feel intolerable. The knee, hip, shoulder, or another joint can be affected. Fever, chills, feeling unwell, swelling, warmth, and reduced movement may occur, but not everyone has every feature.

Most people with septic arthritis notice inability to bear weight when a leg joint is involved. However, being unable to stand or walk has other possible causes, including injury, nerve problems, or severe inflammation. The symptom needs examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Treat inability to bear weight with a possible hot or swollen joint as a same-day medical concern. Avoid forcing the joint, keep weight off it, and arrange urgent evaluation. A clinician may examine the joint, check your general health, and decide whether blood tests, imaging, or fluid sampling are needed. Do not wait for symptoms to settle before seeking advice.

Go to urgent care immediately if you cannot bear weight and have fever, chills, rapidly increasing pain, a hot or swollen joint, confusion, faintness, or a recent procedure, wound, or injection near the joint. Infection can damage joint tissues and needs prompt treatment. Worsening symptoms in someone with diabetes or reduced immunity also warrant urgent attention.

Ask whether the joint needs fluid testing, what diagnoses are being considered, how to protect the joint while waiting, and which changes require emergency help. Tell the clinician about fever, wounds, recent procedures, medicines, and conditions affecting immunity.
