Does semen analysis treat male factor infertility?

A semen analysis can assess features such as the amount of semen, sperm concentration, movement and appearance. The results may help identify a possible male fertility factor, but one sample does not explain every reason a couple may be having difficulty conceiving. Results can vary, and a clinician may recommend repeating the test or arranging additional assessment. The test itself does not increase sperm production, correct a blockage or treat a hormone problem. It is a starting point for choosing the next step.

Follow the laboratory's collection instructions carefully, including the requested period of abstinence and prompt delivery of the sample. Discuss the report with a fertility clinician rather than interpreting an isolated result alone. Depending on the findings, care may include a medical history, examination, hormone testing, ultrasound, treatment of an underlying condition or assisted conception. Both partners may be assessed because fertility can involve more than one factor.

Book a fertility assessment when conception has not occurred despite regular attempts, or sooner if there is a history of testicular injury, surgery, infection, erection or ejaculation difficulty, or treatment that may affect sperm. Seek prompt care for sudden testicular pain or swelling, fever with scrotal pain, or a new testicular lump.
