Does seborrheic dermatitis cause scaly skin?

The scale may be fine and white, or thicker and yellowish when it mixes with skin oil. It commonly appears on the scalp as dandruff, but can also affect the eyebrows, eyelids, beard area, ears, upper chest and the folds beside the nose. The skin underneath may look pink or red and feel itchy, irritated or tight. Symptoms can flare and settle over time rather than remaining identical every day.

Scaly skin has several possible causes, so its appearance alone cannot identify seborrheic dermatitis. A clinician considers the location, colour, itch and pattern, along with other skin changes, when making a diagnosis.

Use a gentle cleansing routine and avoid vigorous scratching, which can worsen irritation and break the skin. For scalp scaling, a clinician or pharmacist may suggest a medicated shampoo; follow its label or professional instructions and allow it to remain on the scalp for the recommended contact time. If the face or body is involved, ask which product is suitable for that area, since scalp treatments are not automatically appropriate for facial skin. Keep a note of triggers, affected areas and how your skin responds.

Arrange an assessment if scaling is new, persistent, spreading, very itchy or not improving with sensible self-care. Seek prompt care if the skin becomes painful, warm, swollen, cracked, oozing or develops crusting, because these changes may need a different treatment. Scaling around the eyes, ears or other sensitive areas also deserves professional advice, especially if there is eye pain or a change in vision.
