Does seborrheic dermatitis cause oily scalp?

Seborrheic dermatitis affects oil-rich skin. Extra surface oil can combine with shed skin cells, creating shiny or greasy areas and flakes that cling to the scalp or hair. Some people also notice irritation around the hairline, behind the ears, or in the eyebrows. Oily scalp can have other explanations, including normal variation, hair products, infrequent washing, or another scalp condition, so the symptom does not by itself establish seborrheic dermatitis.

Cleanse the scalp regularly with a gentle product, and use a medicated shampoo only as directed. Allow the shampoo to remain on the scalp for the recommended time before rinsing. Avoid heavy oils, pomades, and fragranced products if they increase buildup or irritation. Do not scrape scale from the scalp. Arrange an evaluation when oiliness comes with persistent itch, thick scale, painful areas, bleeding, or patchy hair loss.
