Does scar revision surgery treat hypertrophic scar?

A hypertrophic scar is raised and firm but remains within the original wound boundaries. It can itch, feel tender, or restrict movement depending on its location. Revision changes the scar's shape or bulk; it does not guarantee that the skin will heal with a flat appearance.

Because hypertrophic scars may become raised again, a surgeon may consider injections, silicone-based care, pressure, or other measures alongside or instead of surgery. The choice depends on scar age, activity, thickness, symptoms, and the skin around it.

Have the scar examined by a clinician familiar with abnormal scarring. Describe itching, pain, growth, tightness, and any previous treatment. The assessment should distinguish a hypertrophic scar from a keloid and check whether movement or function is affected.

Before agreeing to a procedure, discuss the incision, wound care, activity restrictions, and any planned treatment to reduce renewed thickening. Protect healing skin from friction and sun as directed.

Arrange review if the scar is enlarging, increasingly painful, itchy, tight, or interfering with movement. After revision, report increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or wound separation to the treating team.

Ask whether the scar is hypertrophic or a keloid, why surgery is being recommended, and what non-surgical options remain. Ask how recurrence will be monitored, what aftercare is planned, and what improvement in symptoms or movement is realistic.
